Baby pant closures

Baby pants are a relatively new trend in the baby diaper market. This diaper shape is an underpant-like shape, without the traditional side tabs for closure.

Pant-style diapers have a similar function as traditional disposable diapers, but feature a closed design that requires the wearer or caregiver to slide them up the legs and around the waist. Often marketed as “training pants” or “pullups” for toddlers, these products are increasingly being promoted for use by infants. Initially, this was used in Western Europe and USA as training pants for toddlers, but nowadays we see that it’s being promoted for younger babies too. In Asia, this was already a more common practice. They are manufactured for both development parties (R&D or those responsible for procurement for diaper manufacturers) and the market – from supermarkets and pharmacies that sell private label hygienic products to end users such as parents and caretakers or nurses.

The side tabs in diapers are also used for disposing the diaper: after use, the diaper is typically wrapped into a tight package, and reclosed by using the side tabs. This allows for disposal of the diaper in a hygienic way. Pants however, don’t have side tabs and therefore lack the disposal function. Unlike traditional, open diapers, these pant-style products lack adhesive side tabs that can be put to use to wrap a soiled diaper into a tight ball for safe and hygienic disposal.
