Technologies Selfwound Fastening and Release Tapes

Selfwound fastening and release tapes

Avery Dennison offers selfwound fastening and release tapes. These tapes provide a solution for diaper and personal care converters with the capabilities to assemble tape components as part of their manufacturing process, instead of purchasing the components in a precombined format.

Diaper manufacturers might be hesitant to buy a precombined diaper closure system, as they might feel it’s more cost-efficient to assemble the separate parts themselves. However, it isn’t easy to coat the tape inline, as hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives need some time to “rest” in order to optimize their performance. Moreover, most manufacturers don’t have the inhouse knowledge to make their own adhesives and it’s hard to find readily available adhesives suited for diaper backsheets.

That’s why Avery Dennison offers a solution: separate fastening and release tapes which are coated already, which customers can easily assemble in their diaper manufacturing line.

A trustworthy closure system specially designed and engineered for high performance.

Fastening tapes are available in a nonwoven or a filmic format, and release tapes in a filmic format. Both come in different widths. A fastening tape and a release tape can be combined to form a Y-bond designed to ensure a solid and durable bond on the ear of the diaper. Combined with a hook element and a release tape, this fastening tape will act as a trustworthy closure system to loop surfaces, that is also refastenable.

Application focused adhesives

Our products feature Avery Dennison adhesives that are specially designed and engineered for high performance on a wide range of backsheet materials. The selfwound closure systems are closure systems specifically made for in-line assembly of the tape components.

Usually, the customer will buy fastening tape rolls and release tape rolls and combine them in their production line (to create a two-layer tape), or buy only fastening tape (for single-layer tapes). The adhesive on the tapes is based on pressure-sensitive hotmelt adhesives. There are rolls of fastening tape and rolls of release tape, which ideally are combined to form the aforementioned Y-bonded tape. The assembly process happens in the diaper line on the customer’s side. Typically, the fastening tapes come in a nonwoven laminate construction, and are supplied in a “mirror” construction: the left and right tape are sold as one tape, and are split in two equal tapes in the manufacturing line.
