Mechanical closure systems for open baby diapers

The baby diaper market has evolved over the years, thanks to a sharper focus on comfort for the baby – e.g. avoiding sweat, diaper rashes, leaks – and the goal of eliminating the plastic feel of polypropylene and polyethylene backsheets. As a result, the market has shifted to nonwoven diaper constructions. Especially in Europe and North America, these diapers are now the standard, but you can find them worldwide. And not only the backsheets are now nonwoven, but the closure systems are also shifting to nonwoven solutions for a complete package and a premium and soft look and feel.

As a result, mechanical closures (hook-and-loop tapes) have become the industry standard. That goes for both the side of development (R&D or those responsible for procurement for diaper manufacturers) and from the perspective of the market – from supermarkets and pharmacies that sell private label hygienic products to end users such as parents and caretakers. The main argument for its prowess is the fact that these closures offer a more evolved and reliable solution than adhesives, which are sensitive to contamination by products such as baby oil and talc, prohibiting the optimal closure function.

In the mechanical closures systems, we have a wide portfolio of different constructions (Y-bond tapes, F-mechanical tapes, Mirror tapes) and designs (single hook lane vs multilane, fingerlift and fastening tape carrier colors, measurements of the different parts, etcetera).

Our tapes feature high-performance hooks — aggressive, yet soft — that make a firm bond with loop-based landing zones. They allow the diaper to be opened and reliably closed, multiple times. The hook base is flexible for optimal fit and comfort. It offers a soft, flexible feel that moves with the baby’s body for a perfect fit. Additionally, it helps keeping the closure tape closed while in the packaging, but doesn’t damage the side panels/back ear when opening the tape for use by the end user.

Our adhesives close a diaper in a reliable way. Y-bond gives strongest possible bond onto diaper ear + folds more naturally in the diaper line at the Y-bond, which makes it easier to convert as well. There is a strong bond between the permanent part onto multiple diaper ears. The functional part of the tape is reclosable onto multiple release-coated frontal films and tapes. The medically approved adhesive technology (ISO 10993) has been developed in-house specifically to match a wide variety of diaper back ears and landing zone materials on the market. Our adhesive closure systems for baby diapers have shown to be a proven, reliable solution, mainly used on traditional diapers with a polyethylene backsheet and in combination with a filmic landing zone.
